Just Another AC/DC Clone?
Ahhhhhhh…..there’s always has been and always will be AC/DC
clones. Call it inspiration, wannabe-ism, or plain greed. Let’s see in
the 80’s, we had Krokus and Dirty Looks. Last few years have seen
Airbourne, Buckcherry, and well…….the latest to worship at the DC
altar: Last Vegas and Charm City Devils.
We have Nikki Sixx of Motley Crue to
thank, or blame, for these whiskey-soaked rockers. He has ‘discovered’
them and signed them to his label. Well, to get started both these
bands rock and are talented, so they are obviously not terrible. The
point to be debated is: Will this kind of rock gonna live forever or is
it time to rock on past on this and
evolve?
Lemmmmeeeee see….hmmmmmm……. These guys aren’t gonna save rock and roll…….BUT…… at least, they are getting the old style sound back on the radio. With other old-style new bands like The Answer, they are playing homage to that great seventies and eighties classic rock sound and trying to get something relatively fresh out their as they channel other rockers besides AC/DC.
Last Vegas has some good rock anthems like “I’m Bad” and “Cherry Red.” “Apologize” is the obligatory 80’s rock ballad in the vein of Tesla or Aerosmith’s pop stuff. Charm City Devils have plenty of rock ‘n roll swagger.
Both these bands and cds have great intentions. It’s hard to criticize their energy level and pure party rock and roll spirit. There’s nothing on either of these discs that are going to be spinning on classic rock stations next decade. The spirit is a lot stronger than their material. But, I guess this is better than nothing. Let’s celebrate the formula until someone else does it better. It’s the thought and the volume that counts…. I guess. So raises your glasses, crank the music and CHOMP ON!!!!
